Reflections of Grace

PRAISE THROUGH GENERATIONS

Scripture

Psalms 22:22-31

22I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:23You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!24For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.25From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him.26The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD! May your hearts live forever!27All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.28For kingship belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations.29All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive.30Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;31they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it.
Reflect
  1. 1.In verse 22, the psalmist moves from crying out in suffering to declaring God’s name among the congregation. Where have you seen God turn a painful season into a testimony of praise?
  2. 2.How does it comfort you to know that God does not despise or ignore the suffering of the afflicted?
  3. 3.In verses 30–31, one generation tells the next about what God has done. What story of God’s faithfulness do you need to pass on to someone else?
Exposition
Pain can make our world feel very small. When we are hurting, we often see only what is in front of us: the unanswered question, the heavy burden, the long night, the prayer that seems delayed. began with deep anguish, but it didn’t stop there. The psalmists’ sorrow turns into praise. The sufferer is no longer only crying for help. He is declaring God’s name among God’s people. The turning point is that God heard. Verse 24 reminds us that God does not despise the afflicted. He does not turn his face away from the broken. He listens. He sees. He comes near. Your suffering may feel hidden, but you are not hidden from God. And the hope grows larger. The psalm moves from one person’s deliverance to the worship of the nations. The ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord. Future generations will hear what God has done. Praise is not only for the moment when everything feels easy. Praise is also the sound of a heart that has learned God is faithful in the valley. Suffering is real, but it is not final. God hears. God acts. God delivers. And one day, every knee will bow and every generation will proclaim the same glorious truth: “He has done it.”
Prayer
Father, thank you that you hear the cries of the afflicted and do not turn away from those who suffer. Help me remember your faithfulness and praise you not only in comfort, but also after seasons of pain. Use my story to encourage others and point them to you. Let the next generation see your goodness through what you have done in my life.
