GRACE BEFORE COMMAND

Scripture

Deuteronomy 5:1-15

¹And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.²The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.³Not with our fathers did the LORD make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today.⁴The LORD spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire,⁵while I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD. For you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said:⁶“‘I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.⁷“‘You shall have no other gods before me.⁸“‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.⁹You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,¹⁰but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.¹¹“‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.¹²“‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you.¹³Six days you shall labor and do all your work,¹⁴but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.¹⁵You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

Reflect

1.In verse 2-3, how does the personal nature of God's commands , not just to ancient Israel, affect your sense of responsibility and privilege in responding to him?
2."I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt." How does remembering God's rescue of you, through Christ, change the way you view obedience from a burden into a grateful response?
3.God calls his people to worship him alone and reject false images. What idol, desire, or preference is most tempted to take God’s rightful place in your heart?
4.Verse 15 grounds the Sabbath command in redemption. What does it mean to you that God's commands are not arbitrary but rooted in his saving work on your behalf?

Exposition

We tend to see commands as restrictions, don't we? We think obedience is mainly about proving ourselves, avoiding punishment, or earning God’s approval. But begins with a reminder that changes everything: God delivered his people first. Before Israel was told what to do, they were reminded of what God had done. He brought them out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. The commandments were not a ladder for slaves to climb into freedom. They were the way redeemed people learned to live with the God who had already rescued them. God’s call to exclusive worship, truthful speech, and Sabbath rest is not meant to crush us. He is teaching us to live free. Idols enslave. Misusing God’s name empties our witness. Restlessness makes us forget that we are not our own saviors. God’s commands guard the freedom his grace has given. Obedience is not cold duty; it is grateful response. We worship God alone because no other god rescued us. We honor his name because we belong to him. So today, let grace reshape your obedience. Follow God as someone already loved, rescued, and called to live differently. God’s law is not a chain for his people; it is a path for the free.

Prayer

“Father, thank you for rescuing me by your grace before calling me to obey. Forgive me for treating your commands as burdens or for giving my heart to lesser things. Teach me to worship you alone, honor your name, and rest in your care. Let my obedience flow from gratitude and trust in you.”
