THE GOD WHO BREAKS THE CHAINS

Scripture

Psalms 107:10-16

¹⁰Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons,¹¹for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High.¹²So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help.¹³Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.¹⁴He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart.¹⁵Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!¹⁶For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron.

Exposition

Some darkness is not only around us; sometimes it is the darkness we entered by resisting God. speaks of people sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death because they rebelled against the words of God. Their bondage was painful, but it was not random. Sin had led them into a prison they could not break open themselves. That is a hard truth, but also a merciful one. God loves us enough to show us where rebellion leads. He may allow consequences to humble us, not because he enjoys our pain, but because he wants to wake us up. Sometimes the low place becomes the place where we finally stop pretending we are fine. The chain can become the alarm bell of grace. Then comes the hope: they cried to the Lord, and he delivered them. God did not say, “You made this prison, so stay there.” He brought them out of darkness. He broke their chains. He shattered doors of bronze and cut through bars of iron. His mercy is always stronger than the bondage we created. So do not stay silent in the dark. Cry to the Lord. Confess what needs to be confessed. Turn from what has held you captive. The God who warns us against rebellion is also the God who rescues us from its prison. No chain is stronger than his mercy. No door is too heavy for his hand.

Prayer

“Father, forgive me for the times I have resisted your word and chosen my own way. Thank you for loving me enough to humble me and call me back. Break the chains that sin has formed in my heart and lead me into freedom. Help me walk in obedience, gratitude, and trust today.”
