DON’T JUST STAND THERE

Acts 1:1-11
1In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach,2until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.3He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.4And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;5for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”6So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”7He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”9And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.10And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes,11and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
Reflect
- 1.In verse 4, Jesus tells you not to depart from Jerusalem but to wait for the promise of the Father. What area of your life are you rushing ahead in instead of waiting for God to provide what only he can give?
- 2.In verse 8, Jesus says you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be his witnesses. Where are you trying to serve or speak for him in your own strength instead of relying on the power he promised?
- 3.In verse 11, the angels ask why you stand looking into heaven. What future hope or past experience are you so fixated on that it is keeping you from moving forward with what he has called you to do today?
Exposition
There are moments when life feels like a long pause. You have heard the promises, you believe the truth, but the next step feels unclear and the waiting weighs heavy. You want to move but every door seems closed and every path feels uncertain. The disciples knew that feeling well. They had walked with Jesus, seen him alive after the grave, and still they stood on the mountain asking when everything would finally make sense.
But Jesus did not leave them with a timeline; he left them with a promise. He told them to wait for the Holy Spirit, because power for the mission ahead would never come from their own effort. The truth is, you were never meant to witness, serve, or carry the gospel in your own strength. What he asks of you, he always provides for you. The Spirit is not a bonus feature for the super-spiritual; he is the essential gift for every follower who wants to live with purpose.
The same Jesus who ascended into heaven is the same Jesus who will return. The angels did not rebuke the disciples for looking up; they nudged them to keep moving. The future is secure, but today is still an invitation. He has given you a mission that starts right where you are and stretches to the ends of the earth.
So stop trying to manufacture your own power. Wait on him. You do not need all the answers; you need his presence. Step into your neighborhood, your workplace, your home, and let the Spirit’s power do what your best intentions never could. The world does not need your perfection; it needs his presence in you.
Prayer
“Father, I confess that I often try to serve you in my own strength and end up weary and empty. Teach me to wait on your Spirit and to receive the power you have promised. Help me to keep my eyes on your return while still moving faithfully through today. Fill me with your presence so that my life becomes a witness to your grace. Amen.”
