THE CRY OF THE WOUNDED

Psalms 109:1-5
1Be not silent, O God of my praise!2For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me, speaking against me with lying tongues.3They encircle me with words of hate, and attack me without cause.4In return for my love they accuse me, but I give myself to prayer.5So they reward me evil for good, and hatred for my love.
Reflect
- 1.In verse 1, David asks God not to be silent. What painful situation do you need to bring before God honestly instead of carrying it alone?
- 2.In verse 2, David describes wicked and deceitful words spoken against him. How do you usually respond when people misunderstand, accuse, or speak unfairly about you?
- 3.In verse 4, David says, “I give myself to prayer.” What would it look like for you to turn your hurt into prayer instead of retaliation, bitterness, or self-defense?
- 4.In verse 5, David says he received evil for good and hatred for love. Where do you need God’s grace to keep doing what is right even when it is not returned?
Exposition
Few things hurt as deeply as being repaid with evil after trying to do good. David knew the pain of false accusations, hateful words, and betrayal. He had shown love, but received hostility. He had done good, but was treated with evil. In moments like that, the heart can quickly move toward anger, self-defense, or bitterness.
But David brings the pain honestly before God. He does not sanitize his prayer or act as if words cannot wound. And in verse 4, he gives us a faithful response: “I give myself to prayer.” Instead of letting hurt rule him, he brings it to the Lord.
That is the truth we need when we feel wronged. God is not asking us to deny the hurt. He invites us to bring it to him. Honest prayer is not weakness; it is trust. It says, “Lord, you see what happened. You know what is true. You are able to judge rightly and guard my heart.”
And here is the hope: the God of your praise is already invested in your story. Every whispered lie is seen, and every hidden motive is known. Your prayer reaches heaven when your words reach no one else. There is no wound too deep for his care, and no slander too loud for his justice.
So bring your wounds to God today. Ask him to help you keep doing what is right without letting hatred shape you. The Lord who hears is able to hold both your pain and your heart.
Prayer
“Father, you know the wounds I carry from unfair words, misunderstanding, or rejection. I bring my pain honestly to you instead of letting bitterness take root. Guard my heart when I am tempted to retaliate or defend myself in unhealthy ways. Teach me to respond with prayer, faithfulness, and trust in your justice.”
