HIDING IN THE WINEPRESS

Scripture

Judges 6:11-16

¹¹Now the angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites.¹²And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.”¹³And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the LORD has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.”¹⁴And the LORD turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?”¹⁵And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.”¹⁶And the LORD said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”

Reflect

1.- Where is fear, pressure, or discouragement causing you to live smaller than God’s calling?
2.- The angel of the Lord calls Gideon a “mighty man of valor.” How does it challenge you to know that God sees more in you than you often see in yourself?
3.- Gideon asks why all these troubles have happened if the Lord is with them. What questions or disappointments do you need to bring honestly before God?
4.- Gideon points to his weakness, but the Lord promises his presence. Where do you need to trust that God’s presence is greater than your inadequacy?

Exposition

Fear can make us hide in places we were never meant to stay. Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress, trying to protect what little he had from the Midianites. He was not standing on a battlefield. He was not feeling brave. He was surviving, discouraged and afraid. Then the Lord met him there and called him a mighty man of valor. That must have sounded strange to Gideon. He did not feel mighty. He had questions, doubts, and a deep awareness of his weakness. He even asked why Israel was suffering if the Lord was with them. Gideon’s faith was not bold at first. It was trembling and confused. But God did not begin by telling Gideon how impressive he was. He gave him something better: “I will be with you.” That is the heart of the passage. God’s calling is not built on our confidence, background, or natural strength. It is built on his presence. Weakness is not a barrier when God goes with us. God knows where we are hiding. He hears the questions we are afraid to say out loud. He sees the courage we do not yet feel. And he is able to call us forward, not because we are enough, but because he is with us. So do not let fear define your calling. Bring your weakness honestly to God, but do not stop there. Take the next step he gives you. The God who found Gideon in the winepress can meet you in your fear and lead you by his presence.

Prayer

“Heavenly Father, thank you for seeing the potential in us even when we feel small, scared, and entirely unqualified for the tasks ahead. Please forgive us for hiding in our own winepresses and give us the courage to step out in faith today. Remind our hearts that your presence goes with us, making us strong enough to face whatever challenges come our way. We trust you to equip us for the beautiful plans you have for our lives.”
