Luke 14:12-24

¹²He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid.¹³But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,¹⁴and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”¹⁵When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”¹⁶But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many.¹⁷And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’¹⁸But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’¹⁹And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’²⁰And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’²¹So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’²²And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’²³And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.²⁴For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’”

Reflect

1.Jesus tells his host to invite those who cannot repay him. Where are you tempted to show kindness only when it benefits you in return?
2.The invited guests make excuses. What good thing in your life could become an excuse for neglecting God’s invitation?
3.In verses 21–23, the poor, crippled, blind, and lame are brought into the banquet. How does this widen your view of the kind of people God welcomes?
4.Who is that one person that you may have held back from welcoming into your table?

Exposition

We often prefer relationships that feel safe, convenient, and beneficial. We invite those who can invite us back. We help those who might someday help us. Even our kindness can quietly become a transaction. But Jesus shows us a different kind of grace. He tells his host to invite the poor, crippled, lame, and blind — people who could not repay him. This is the heart of God’s kingdom. Grace does not ask, “What can I get back?” Grace moves toward need. The love of God welcomes those who have nothing to offer. Then Jesus tells a parable about a great banquet. The invited guests refuse to come because of fields, oxen, and family matters. None of these things were evil in themselves, but they became excuses. Good gifts can become dangerous when they keep us from God. The feast was ready, but their hearts were elsewhere. Yet the master does not cancel the banquet. He sends for the overlooked, the needy, and the outsiders. God’s invitation is not for the impressive, deserving, or socially important. It is for the empty-handed. The kingdom is a feast of grace, and the only way to come is to receive. So do not delay. Do not hide behind excuses. Come to the grace of God with open hands, and let that grace also reshape how you treat others.

Prayer

“Father, thank you for inviting the undeserving into your grace. Forgive me for making excuses or treating kindness like a transaction. Teach me to receive your invitation with humility and joy. Help me welcome others with the same grace you have shown me.”
