REMEMBERING OUR PROVIDER

Scripture

Deuteronomy 8:11-18

¹¹“Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today,¹²lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them,¹³and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied,¹⁴then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,¹⁵who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock,¹⁶who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.¹⁷Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’¹⁸You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Reflect

1.Moses warns about the danger of your heart being lifted up when you have eaten and are full; what blessing in your life right now is making you spiritually comfortable and prone to forget him?
2.In verses 15–16, Moses reminds Israel how God led and provided in the wilderness. What past season of God’s provision do you need to remember today?
3.Verse 18 reminds us that God gives the power to get wealth; how can you intentionally acknowledge his provision the next time you receive a paycheck or a career win?

Exposition

Success can be dangerous when it teaches us to forget. When life is hard, we often know we need God. We pray, depend, ask, and wait. But when the house is full, the work is fruitful, and the needs are met, our hearts can quietly begin to say, “I did this.” Moses warned Israel about that danger. The promised land would be good. They would eat, build, multiply, and prosper. But blessing could become a test. Would they remember the Lord who brought them out of Egypt, led them through the wilderness, fed them with manna, and gave water in the desert? Or would comfort make them proud? Every blessing has a Giver. Even our ability to work, earn, build, think, lead, and succeed comes from God. We may labor faithfully, but God gives the strength. We may make wise decisions, but God gives the opportunity. We may enjoy good gifts, but God is the source. Pride says, “My hands did this.” Worship says, “God gave me these hands.” Remembering God protects the soul. Gratitude keeps blessing from becoming an idol and humility keeps success from hardening the heart. The same God who sustained you in the wilderness is the God who must be remembered in abundance. So yes enjoy God’s gifts, but do not forget his grace. Receive blessings with open hands and a bowed heart. Prosperity is safest when it turns into praise.

Prayer

“Father, thank you for every blessing, ability, and opportunity you have given me. Forgive me for the times I become proud and forget that all I have comes from you. Teach me to remember your faithfulness in both need and abundance. Keep my heart humble, grateful, and obedient before you.”
