LOVED AT OUR LOWEST

Romans 5:6-112 min read

The Passage

6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

7For one will scarcely die for a righteous person — though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die —

8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

9Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

10For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

11More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Reflect & Apply

  1. Paul says Christ died for the ungodly while we were still weak. Where do you need to stop trying to make yourself worthy before receiving God’s grace?
  2. God shows his love for us while we were still sinners. How does this challenge the fear that God only loves you when you are doing well?
  3. Paul says we are justified and reconciled through Christ. Do you still live as if you are an enemy of God rather than a reconciled child?
  4. Paul says we rejoice in God because we have received reconciliation. What is one specific reason you can praise him today, regardless of your circumstances?

Today’s Word

We often find it easier to believe that God loves us when we are doing well. When prayers are consistent, choices are good, and faith feels strong, grace seems easier to receive. But when we fail, disappoint ourselves, or feel spiritually weak, we may wonder if God has moved farther away.

tells us something better. Christ did not wait for us to become strong, righteous, or impressive. He died for us while we were weak and ungodly. God’s love moved toward us at our worst. Grace did not wait for improvement. Grace came first.

Paul says that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. That means the cross is not proof that we became lovable. It is proof that God loved us when we had nothing to offer. His love is not a reward for spiritual performance. It is the mercy that rescues us from sin. And the result is reconciliation. We were once his enemies, but through the death of Jesus, God brought us near. The cross does more than forgive; it brings us home.

We do not to strive to be worthy. We come because Jesus has already made peace for us. So today, rest in the love God has already shown. Rejoice in God himself, not just in what he gives, but in who he is.

Prayer

Father, thank you for loving me while I was still weak and sinful. Help me stop measuring your love by my performance. Thank you for reconciling me to yourself through Jesus and bringing me near. Teach me to live today with gratitude, humility, and joy in your grace.
