RULER, REDEEMER, THE GOLDEN CALF

Acts 7:30-432 min read

The Passage

30“Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.

31When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord:

32‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.

33Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

34I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’

35“This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ — this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

36This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.

37This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.’

38This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us.

39Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,

40saying to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’

41And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands.

42But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: “‘Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices, during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

43You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship; and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’

Reflect & Apply

  1. Notice the three verbs in verse 34: seen, heard, come down. Which of these do you most need to remember about God today, and why?
  2. Stephen keeps repeating "this Moses." Read and . Who is the "prophet like me" that Moses promised?
  3. Israel's hearts "turned to Egypt." What old habits, comforts, or idols does your heart sometimes turn back to?

Today’s Word

In many Filipino homes, the first thing you do at the door is slip off your shoes or tsinelas. It's a small act of respect. You're entering someone's home, and you honor it.

Now imagine God telling you to take off your sandals in the middle of a desert. That's what happened to Moses. Forty years after fleeing Egypt, now an old shepherd, he saw a bush burning without burning up. And God spoke from the flame: "Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground" ().

Holy ground. In a wilderness. No temple in sight. Wherever God shows up, that place becomes holy.

Then God said something beautiful: "I have surely seen the affliction of my people... and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them" (v. 34). Our God sees. Our God hears. Our God comes down.

And he sends Moses, the man they pushed away became the one who led them out (verse 35). But here is the sad twist. Even after God set them free, they “refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt” (verse 39). Their feet had left slavery, but their hearts were walking back. They made a golden calf and were "rejoicing in the works of their hands."

We can do the same. Jesus sets us free, and we still miss our old chains, or we rejoice in our careers, savings, and reputations more than in the One who saved us. The good news? God sent a greater Redeemer. Jesus, rejected by his own, has been raised by God as Ruler and Savior, and his arms are still open.

Today's challenge: Name one "calf" in your life, something good that has quietly taken God's place. Give it back to him in prayer today.

Prayer

Lord, thank you that you see, you hear, and you come down to rescue. Forgive me for turning back to old chains and for rejoicing in the works of my hands more than in you. Today I welcome Jesus as my Ruler and Redeemer. In his name, Amen.

Thank you for reading today.
