Reflections of Grace

FAITHFUL IN THE WAITING

Scripture

Mark 15:42-47

42And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,43Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.44Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.45And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph.46And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
Reflect
  1. 1.In verse 43, Joseph of Arimathea is described as "a respected member of the council." How does your own public reputation or social standing make it harder or easier for you to identify openly with Jesus?
  2. 2.The same verse says Joseph "took courage." What fear would you need to overcome in order to publicly align yourself with Jesus?
  3. 3.What does the faithful witness of Mary Magdalen and Mary the Mother of Joses, even from a distance, teach you about showing up when you cannot do anything bold or dramatic?
Exposition
There are seasons when life feels hopeless. The stone looks heavy, and the silence feels final. brings us into one of those moments. Jesus has died. The crowds have left. The disciples are mostly absent. But even in the darkness, faithfulness is still moving. Joseph of Arimathea steps forward with courage. He asks Pilate for the body of Jesus and gives him a proper burial. It may have looked like a small act compared to miracles, sermons, and crowds, but in that moment, it mattered deeply. Faithfulness does not always feel dramatic. Sometimes love looks like doing the next right thing with trembling hands. The women are there too. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses watch where Jesus is laid. They cannot change what happened. But they stay. They see. They remember. Love does not always know what to do, but love remains near. Here is the hope: Jesus was truly dead. Pilate confirmed it. The centurion confirmed it. Joseph wrapped the body and sealed the tomb. Death did its worst. But death lost! The burial is not the end; it is the pause before the victory. For Joseph and the women, it looked hopeless. But three days later, that empty tomb would vindicate their quiet courage. So when you are in a waiting season, do not despise small faithfulness. Serve quietly. Prayerfully stay. Love steadily. Because the God who works in resurrection power is also present in the silence before it.
Prayer
Father, help me trust you in seasons that feel dark, heavy, or unfinished. Give me quiet courage like Joseph and faithful love like the women who stayed near Jesus. Teach me to do the next right thing even when I cannot see the full story. Thank you that in Christ, the tomb is never the final word.
