Reflections of Grace

HOPE AGAINST HOPE

Scripture

Romans 4:18-22

18In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.”19He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb.20No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,21fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.22That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.”
Reflect
  1. 1.Abraham believed “in hope” even when his situation looked hopeless. Where do you need to keep trusting God even when the visible evidence feels discouraging?
  2. 2.Abraham faced the weakness of his body and Sarah’s barrenness honestly. What difficult reality do you need to acknowledge without letting it become greater than God’s promise?
  3. 3.Abraham was fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. What promise of God do you need to hold onto today?
Exposition
Sometimes faith feels hardest when hope has very little evidence to hold onto. The door looks closed. The body feels weak. The years have passed. The waiting has stretched too long. Like Abraham, you may be standing in a place where God’s promise and your present reality seem far apart. But tells us that Abraham did not pretend the problem was small. He considered his own body, which was as good as dead, and he knew Sarah’s womb was barren. Faith is not denial. Faith looks at reality, then looks up. It does not ignore the weakness; it trusts the God who is stronger. Abraham’s hope was not rooted in favorable circumstances. His hope was rooted in the character of God. He did not waver in unbelief, but grew strong in faith as he gave glory to God. Worship strengthened his waiting. Praise lifted his eyes. The promise was sure because the Promiser was faithful. This is our hope when our own waiting feels long. God is not limited by what looks possible to us. He is able to do what he has promised. Your situation may look barren, but God is not empty-handed. So bring your honest reality before him. Name the weakness. Name the fear. But do not stop there. Name his faithfulness too. Faith does not mean you see the whole path. It means you trust the One who keeps his word.
Prayer
Father, help me trust you when hope feels difficult and the waiting feels long. Teach me to face reality honestly without forgetting your power and faithfulness. Strengthen my faith as I worship you in the middle of the waiting. Make me fully convinced that you are able to do what you have promised.
