CHANGED IN HIS PRESENCE

Scripture

Exodus 34:29-35

²⁹When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. 32 Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. 33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. 34 Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, 35 the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

1.When have you experienced the presence of God so deeply that it left a visible mark on your demeanor, and what made you unaware of it at the time?
2.What "veils" do you tend to wear (i.e. protecting yourself, hiding your true self, or masking what God has done in your life) and what would it look like to remove them?
3.What would change in your relationships if the glory of God was visibly evident in your daily interactions?

Exposition

We often want change to happen quickly. We want stronger faith, greater patience, wiser words, and a calmer heart. But deep transformation usually happens quietly, through repeated time with God. When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, his face shone because he had been speaking with the Lord. He did not even realize it was there. The glory on his face was the result of being near God. What happened privately in God’s presence became visible publicly. This reminds us that spiritual transformation is not mainly about trying harder to look different. It begins with drawing near. We become more like the One we spend time with. God’s presence leaves a mark. His word reshapes our thinking. His holiness exposes what needs to change. His grace softens what has become hard. People saw the radiance, but Moses had received more than an outward glow. He also carried God’s word to them. A real encounter with God should affect both our character and our conduct. Time with God is not meant to end with us. It should become visible in our patience, humility, courage, compassion, and obedience. Transformation is God’s work in us. Time spent with God is never wasted. So keep drawing near. Open his word. Pray honestly. Stay in his presence. You do not need to force the shine. Let God do the changing.

“Father, thank you that your presence changes those who draw near to you. Help me seek you with an open and attentive heart. Shape my character through your word and make your grace visible in the way I live. Let my life reflect your goodness to the people around me.”
