STAYING CONNECTED
Scripture
John 15:1-8
1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.2Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.3Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.5I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.6If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.8By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
Reflect
- 1.What is your understanding of pruning? What area of your life might God be pruning right now, and how can you trust his hand in that process?
- 2.What does abiding in Christ actually look like in the ordinary rhythms of your daily life (i.e. your work, your relationships, your quiet moments)?
- 3.Jesus says, "apart from me you can do nothing." Where are you tempted to rely on your own strength instead of remaining connected to him, and what has that produced?
- 4.How does letting Scripture dwell in you shape the desires you bring to God in prayer?
Exposition
There are times when life feels like a constant sprint, and no matter how hard you push, you end up exhausted and empty. You try to produce more, serve better, and keep everything together, but the fruit you long for seems to wither before it ever ripens. Jesus sees that struggle, and his words in cut straight to the heart of it: the problem is not your effort; it is your connection.
He tells you plainly, "I am the vine; you are the branches." A branch does not strain to grow fruit; it simply stays attached to the vine and fruit happens naturally. The same is true for you. Your job is not to manufacture spiritual results. Your job is to remain — to abide, to rest, to stay close. Apart from him, you can do nothing, but in him, fruit flows freely. That is an invitation to stop striving and start trusting.
And here is the beautiful hope: the Father is not waiting to punish barren branches; he is actively pruning the fruitful ones so they can flourish even more. The cutting back hurts, but it is always for increase, not harm. When you let his word settle into your heart and keep showing up in honest prayer, you will find that what you ask begins to align with what he wants, and your life starts to look like his.
So stop trying to bear fruit on your own. Just be the branch. Stay connected, stay humble, and let him grow what only he can grow. The fruit will come, not because you forced it, but because you stayed close to the one who gives life. That is where real freedom lives.
Prayer
“Father, I confess that I often try to produce fruit on my own and end up weary and empty. Teach me what it means to simply abide in you. Grow in me the kind of fruit that glorifies you and shows the world that I belong to Jesus. Amen.”
