SATISFYING THE SOUL

Scripture

Psalms 107:4-9

⁴Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in;⁵hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.⁶Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.⁷He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in.⁸Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!⁹For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

Reflect

1.In verse 4, the people wandered in desert wastes and found no city to dwell in. Where in your life do you feel directionless, unsettled, or far from home?
2.In verse 5, they were hungry, thirsty, and fainting. What need have you been trying to satisfy apart from God?
3.In verse 6, they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them. What is the difference between complaining about your circumstances and crying out to God in them, and how can you cultivate the latter?
4.What longings in your heart right now feel unsatisfied, and how does this promise of divine satisfaction speak into them?

Exposition

There are seasons when life feels like a wilderness. You may have activity, responsibilities, and people around you, yet deep inside, your soul feels hungry, thirsty, and tired. describes people wandering in desert wastes, unable to find a city to dwell in. Their bodies were weak, and their souls fainted within them. It is a picture of need that cannot be ignored. But they cried to the Lord in their trouble. They did not rescue themselves. They cried out, and God delivered them. He led them by a straight way until they reached a city to dwell in. God is not only able to feed the hungry; he is able to guide the lost. Jesus is the fulfillment of this journey. He entered the wilderness for you. He was hungry and thirsty. He fainted under the weight of the cross. He cried out to the Father in his trouble. And he was delivered and raised from the dead so that you could be brought home. In Christ, the wilderness is not your permanent address. It is the pathway to the city. And along the way, he satisfies your longing soul. Your deepest hunger is not for food but for him. And he satisfies. So cry out to him today. Bring your hunger, thirst, confusion, and weariness. Do not settle for substitutes that cannot fill you. Remember the One who said, "I am the bread of life" is the same one who satisfies, fills, leads and brings you home.

Prayer

“Father, you see the places where I feel weary, empty, and unsure of the way. Lead me out of wandering and teach me to trust your goodness. Satisfy the longings of my soul with what only you can give. Help me cry out to you instead of running to things that cannot truly fill me.”
