THE ANCIENT OF DAYS
Scripture
Daniel 7:9-14
9“As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire.10A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.11“I looked then because of the sound of the great words that the horn was speaking. And as I looked, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire.12As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.13“I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.14And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
Reflect
- 1.Daniel sees the Ancient of Days seated in glory and judgment. How does this strengthen your confidence when the world feels chaotic, unjust, or out of control?
- 2.In verse 10, the court sits in judgment and the books are opened. What area of your life do you need to bring honestly before the God who sees all things?
- 3.In verses 13–14, one like a son of man comes with the clouds of heaven and receives dominion, glory, and a kingdom. How does the reign of Christ give you hope beyond present troubles?
- 4.God’s kingdom is described as everlasting and indestructible. What temporary fear, pressure, or earthly power needs to be dethroned so that you can freely serve him today?
Exposition
There are days when the news feels like a beast with iron teeth, devouring peace and leaving you anxious before your feet even hit the floor. You scroll through headlines of power, conflict, and cruelty, and your heart shrinks. Personal trials can feel the same way. Each one roaring like a creature you cannot control. You feel small, exposed, and wonder if anyone is in charge of the madness.
But Daniel saw something that can steady your soul. Thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. The beasts are loud, but the throne is permanent. What looks like chaos to you is a courtroom to him. He is not pacing in heaven, worried about the latest threat. He is seated in fire and purity, and the books are already open.
And here is the hope that lifts us: With the clouds of heaven, one like a son of man came to him. To him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom that will never pass away. That is Jesus. Your citizenship is in a kingdom that outlasts every empire.
So lift your eyes above what feels unstable. Bring your fears before the Lord. Live faithfully under the King whose kingdom cannot fall. Today’s troubles are real, but they are not ultimate. Jesus reigns, and his reign will never end.
Prayer
“Father, thank you that you are seated in glory and that nothing is hidden from your sight. Help me trust your righteous rule when the world feels unjust or uncertain. Fix my eyes on Jesus, the Son of Man, whose kingdom cannot be destroyed. Teach me to live with courage, faithfulness, and hope under his everlasting reign.”
