John 16:7-15
7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.8And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:9concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;10concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;11concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.12“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.14He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.15All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Reflect
- 1.Jesus says it is actually to our advantage that he goes away so the Helper can come. How does knowing you have the Holy Spirit in you change the way you face your daily loneliness or struggles?
- 2.The Spirit convicts the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment. How have you been responding to the Spirit’s conviction in your heart?
- 3.Jesus says the Spirit will guide his people into all the truth. What decision, confusion, or struggle do you need to bring under the Spirit’s guidance?
Exposition
Sometimes we think life would be easier if Jesus simply stood beside us physically and told us exactly what to do. The disciples felt that way too. Jesus was preparing them for his departure, and grief filled their hearts. How could his leaving possibly be better?
But Jesus told them the truth: his going would bring the coming of the Helper. The Holy Spirit would not be a lesser gift. He would convict, guide, speak, and glorify Christ. Jesus was not abandoning his people; he was giving them the presence of God in a deeper and ongoing way. The Spirit does not just visit; he moves in.
That means you are not an orphan trying to decode a distant God. The same Spirit who guided the apostles is the one whispering in your confusion right now. And he guides us toward Jesus. The Spirit does not glorify our opinions, emotions, or ambitions. He glorifies Christ. One mark of his work in us is a growing love for Jesus, a deeper trust in his word, and a life that points away from self and toward the Savior.
So do not walk through today relying only on your own understanding. Ask for help. Listen to the truth. Welcome conviction. Follow where the Spirit leads. Jesus has not left you without guidance. The Spirit of truth is with his people, and he always leads us toward Christ.
The Helper is the better plan, and he is already here.
Prayer
“Father, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to guide, convict, and help your people. Teach me to welcome your truth even when it exposes what needs to change. Lead me away from self-reliance and closer to Jesus. May my thoughts, words, and choices bring glory to him today.”
