CUT TO THE HEART

Acts 2:37-41

³⁷Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”³⁸And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.³⁹For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”⁴⁰And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”⁴¹So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

Reflect

1.In verse 37, the people were “cut to the heart” after hearing Peter’s message. When God’s word exposes something in your heart, how do you respond?
2.In verse 38, Peter calls the crowd to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. What specific turning from sin or public obedience is God calling you to take seriously?
3.In verse 41, about three thousand received the word and were baptized. How does this encourage you to believe that God can still change many hearts through the gospel?

Exposition

We often run from our own mistakes and hide our flaws. When we mess up or fall into old patterns, our first instinct is to quietly retreat. We feel disqualified from God's love, assuming we have to clean up our messy lives before we can ever approach him. The guilt makes us pull away, convinced that his grace has an expiration date and that we have finally crossed the line. But Peter’s bold sermon in Acts shows us exactly how God responds to a broken, searching crowd. When the people heard the truth, they were deeply cut to the heart and desperately asked what to do. Peter didn't hand them a checklist of religious chores to earn their way in. Peter simply told them to repent and receive the gift. God never demands flawless perfection before he generously pours out his Spirit. Then comes the most breathtaking assurance in the entire passage. Peter boldly declares that this promise is for you, for your children, and for everyone who is far off. God's grace has absolutely no geographical or generational limits. No matter how far you have wandered or how deep your past mistakes go, his call reaches right into your mess. The creator of the universe is inviting you into his family. Your past does not disqualify you from his future. So stop hiding from the very one who wants to heal you. When you feel that gentle, loving conviction in your heart today, do not run away. Turn toward him with open hands, honestly confess your struggles, and fully receive the forgiveness he freely offers. Step out of the dark shadows and bravely walk in the daily power of his Spirit.

“Father, thank you for loving me enough to confront my heart with truth. Help me respond to conviction with repentance instead of resistance. Thank you that forgiveness and new life are found in Jesus. Give me courage to obey you openly and hope for those who still seem far from you.”
