THE GOD WHO COMES DOWN

Exodus 19:16-20

¹⁶On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled.¹⁷Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain.¹⁸Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly.¹⁹And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder.²⁰The LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. And the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

1.Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God. What does it mean for you to "come out" of your comfort zone and stand before God, ready to hear what he has to say?

Exposition

We can become so familiar with the language of God’s love that we forget the weight of his holiness. does not allow us to picture God as casual, manageable, or ordinary. Thunder breaks across the mountain. Lightning flashes. A thick cloud descends. The trumpet grows louder. The mountain trembles, and so do the people. God is near, but his nearness is overwhelming. That is an important truth for us. God is not simply a comforting presence we add to our lives when we need help. He is the holy Lord. His presence exposes how small we are and how worthy he is. Reverence is not fear that drives us away from God; it is awe that teaches us who we are standing before. And yet the wonder of the passage is that God comes down. The holy God chooses to reveal himself. He calls Moses upward. God’s holiness creates distance, but his grace creates a way to draw near. His presence is not cheap, but neither is it closed. We do not have to choose between seeing God as loving or holy. He is both. His holiness keeps us from treating him casually. His grace keeps us from running away in despair. The God who makes the mountain tremble is also the God who calls his people to himself. So come before him today with a heart that is both humble and confident. Slow down. Worship before you rush into requests. Remember who he is. The closer we see his holiness, the more precious his grace becomes.

Prayer

“Father, you are holy, majestic, and worthy of my deepest reverence. Forgive me for the times I approach you casually or forget the weight of your glory. Thank you that in your grace you invite me to draw near. Teach me to worship you with awe, humility, and trust.”
