TRUE GENEROSITY

Acts 4:32-37

³²Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.³³And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.³⁴There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold³⁵and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.³⁶Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus,³⁷sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.

Reflect

1.The believers were “of one heart and soul.” What attitude, hurt, or preference might be making it harder for you to pursue unity with other believers?
2.What resource has God entrusted to you that could be used more generously for someone else’s good?
3.The apostles testified to the resurrection “with great power,” and “great grace was upon them all.” How should the grace you have received in Christ become visible in the way you treat others?
4.How can you use your own resources or time today to be a genuine source of encouragement to someone feeling depleted?

Exposition

We are naturally possessive, aren't we? We work hard for what we have, and we hold it tightly. The early church, however, did something radical. They were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of their possessions. They shared everything. The struggle is that this kind of generosity feels impossible, even foolish. We think, If I give that away, what will happen to me? But for the early church, the resurrection had transformed their view of everything. The apostles were testifying with great power to the resurrection of Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. The resurrection did not just remain a doctrine to believe; it was a reality that reshape their hearts. If Jesus is risen, then death is defeated, and security is found in him, not in possessions. Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of this passage. He did not hold onto his divine privileges. The cross is the greatest act of generosity in history. And the same Spirit who raised him from the dead now indwells us, producing the same generosity. We do not give to earn God's favor; we give because we have already received it. So look at what God has placed in your hands today. You may not have a field to sell, but you have something to share. Grace opens the heart, and an open heart eventually opens the hand.

Prayer

“Father, thank you for the great grace you have shown me through Jesus. Forgive me for the times I hold too tightly to what you have entrusted to me. Give me a generous heart that notices needs and responds with love. Let your grace become visible through the way I share my life and resources with others.”
