BEYOND APPEARANCES

Acts 5:1-112 min read

The Passage

1But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,

2and with his wife's knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet.

3But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?

4While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”

5When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it.

6The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.

7After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.

8And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.”

9But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”

10Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

11And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.

Reflect & Apply

  1. Where are you tempted to present a false front, to appear more generous, more spiritual, or more faithful than you really are?
  2. In verses 3–4, Peter explains that their sin was not keeping some money, but lying to the Holy Spirit. Where might you be more concerned about maintaining your reputation than being honest before God?
  3. In verses 5 and 11, “great fear” came upon those who heard what happened. How does this passage challenge you to take God's holiness seriously?
  4. Sapphira had another opportunity to tell the truth but continued the deception. When have you been given a second chance to be honest but chose to protect your image instead, and what did you learn from that experience?

Today’s Word

We naturally want others to think well of us. We want to appear generous, faithful, committed, and spiritually mature. But sometimes the desire to look good becomes stronger than the desire to be truthful.

Ananias and Sapphira wanted the reputation of extraordinary generosity while secretly keeping part of the money. Their problem was not that they gave too little. Peter made clear that the property and proceeds were theirs to manage. Their sin was pretending before people while lying to God.

This passage reminds us that God sees beyond our carefully managed appearances. We may impress others with what they see, but God knows what is happening in our hearts. A convincing appearance is not the same as genuine devotion.

We do not have to manufacture an impressive spiritual image before God. Through Jesus, we can come honestly, confess our sins, and receive mercy. God desires truthful hearts, not polished performances. So resist the pressure to appear more spiritual than you are. Bring your hidden struggles into the light. Let your public life reflect your private devotion.

True reverence is not merely fear of being exposed; it is learning to value God's approval more than people's applause.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times I have cared more about my reputation than my integrity before you. Search my heart and expose the places where I have allowed dishonesty or hypocrisy to grow. Teach me to approach you with reverence, honesty, and gratitude for your grace. Help me live faithfully before you, even when no one else is watching.
