MORE THAN APPEARANCE

2 Timothy 3:1-92 min read

The Passage

1But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.

2For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,

3heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good,

4treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

5having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

6For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions,

7always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.

8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith.

9But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.

Reflect & Apply

  1. Where in your life are you going through the motions of faith while keeping your heart at a distance from God?
  2. What is the difference between looking godly and actually being transformed by God's power?
  3. Are you "always learning" but never letting what you learn change you and where is that most true right now?
  4. What would it look like to bring your real self (i.e. your pride, fear, and doubt) honestly before God this week?

Today’s Word

We live in times that feel difficult, and Paul's list reads like today's headlines. Lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, ungrateful, heartless. It is tempting to read this passage and nod along, thinking of everyone else. But then Paul says something that should stop us: "having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power." That phrase is not aimed at the world. It is aimed at the church!

We know this too well. We can sing the songs, keep the rules, and say the right words while keeping God at arm's length. We can be "always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth" — consuming sermons and podcasts and books, but never letting any of it reach our hearts. Appearance is easy. Transformation is costly.

But here is the hope: the power we are tempted to deny is still available. God does not ask us to manufacture change on our own. He invites us to stop performing and start abiding. When we bring our real selves to him, he meets us with grace and begins to shape us from the inside out. God is not impressed by the mask. He is after the heart.

So today, take off the mask. Name the area where you have been going through the motions. Invite God into it honestly. Real godliness begins when we stop pretending and let his power do what our performance never could.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have been more concerned about appearing godly than genuinely becoming like Christ. Search my heart and reveal any pride, selfishness, or misplaced love that I have allowed to grow. Help me not only to know your Word but also to respond to it with sincere repentance and faithful obedience. In Jesus' name, Amen.
