ON YOUR SIDE

Psalms 118:5-92 min read

The Passage

5Out of my distress I called on the LORD; the LORD answered me and set me free.

6The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?

7The LORD is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.

8It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.

9It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.

Reflect & Apply

  1. Where are you tempted right now to trust in a person, a plan, or a powerful institution more than you trust in God?
  2. What would change in your daily decisions if you truly believed the Lord is on your side?
  3. When has God answered you in a moment of distress, and how can remembering that strengthen your faith today?
  4. What does it look like for you to run to God first rather than to human help this week?

Today’s Word

When life becomes difficult, we naturally look for someone who can help. We call a trusted friend, seek advice from someone experienced, or turn to people who have the influence and resources to make things better. There is nothing wrong with seeking help. But sometimes we place so much confidence in people that everything depends entirely on what they can do for us. And then they disappoint us.

The writer of understood what it meant to face distress. He describes calling out to the Lord during a difficult season and experiencing God's answer. Then he makes a remarkable declaration: “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (v. 6).

His confidence was not based on having powerful connections or favorable circumstances. It came from knowing that God was with him.

And then the psalmist goes on to repeat an important truth: it is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man or princes. This does not mean we should distrust everyone or refuse help from others. God often provides for us through people. But even the most reliable person has limitations. People can offer help, but only God can be our ultimate refuge.

Perhaps you are facing a situation where you feel vulnerable. Remember that God's presence does not guarantee a trouble-free life. But it gives us a firm foundation when everything else feels uncertain. The Lord is on your side. That is enough.

Prayer

Father, thank you that you are on our side and that you answer when we call. When distress makes us want to trust in people or plans instead of you, remind us that you are our refuge and helper. Teach us to run to you first, and give us courage to live without fear of what others can do. In Jesus' name, Amen.
