SURROUNDED BUT NOT OVERCOME

Psalms 118:10-142 min read

The Passage

10All nations surrounded me; in the name of the LORD I cut them off!

11They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side; in the name of the LORD I cut them off!

12They surrounded me like bees; they went out like a fire among thorns; in the name of the LORD I cut them off!

13I was pushed hard, so that I was falling, but the LORD helped me.

14The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.

Reflect & Apply

  1. Have you ever faced a situation where problems seemed to come from every direction? How did you respond?
  2. Three times the psalmist declares that he prevailed “in the name of the LORD.” What does it mean for you to depend on God's strength?
  3. The psalmist acknowledges that he was pushed hard and nearly fell, but the Lord helped him. How does this remind you that trusting God does not mean we will never experience weakness or setbacks?
  4. Verse 14 declares that the Lord is our strength, song, and salvation. Which of these three descriptions speaks most directly to your present circumstances, and why?

Today’s Word

Have you ever felt like life was coming at you from every direction? You try to stay strong, but deep inside, you wonder how much longer you can keep going.

The writer of knew that feeling. He describes being surrounded by hostile nations, comparing them to bees swarming around him. The pressure was intense yet three times he declares that he prevailed “in the name of the LORD.” His confidence came from God's power rather than his own strength.

Then the psalmist makes an honest admission: “I was pushed hard, so that I was falling, but the LORD helped me” (verse 13). He does not pretend that he was unaffected by the struggle. He had been pushed to the point of collapse. But when his strength was failing, God came to his aid.

But he concludes, “The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation” (verse 14). Notice that God is not merely the source of his strength. God himself is his strength and his reason for praise.

When your strength runs out, God's faithfulness remains. So bring your struggles honestly before him. You do not have to pretend to be strong. Trust the Lord who hears your cries and sustains you through every season.

Prayer

Father, thank you that you are near when trouble surrounds us on every side. When we are pushed hard and feel ourselves falling, help us to call on your name instead of counting our fears. Be our strength and our song today, and teach us to trust the help you have always given. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Thank you for reading today.
