The Passage

54Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him.

55But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

56And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”

57But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together at him.

58Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

59And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

60And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

1And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.

2Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him.

3But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison.

Reflect & Apply

  1. List the council’s reactions to Stephen. What do these actions reveal about the condition of their hearts?
  2. What did Stephen see when he looked up, and why does it matter that Jesus was standing?
  3. How do Stephen’s final prayers show what he believed about Jesus and how he felt toward his enemies?
  4. The passage ends with grief, scattering, and persecution. Where in your life does it look like the story is over, and how might God still be at work?

Today’s Word

Have you ever walked into a room and felt every pair of eyes turn against you? Maybe it was a family gathering where you knew you would be the topic. Maybe it was a meeting at work where the blame had been decided before you even sat down. Your chest tightens. Your eyes drop to the floor.

Stephen knew that room. He stood before the most powerful council in Israel, and when he finished speaking, Luke says they “ground their teeth at him” (verse 54). Every face was hard. Every verdict was already in.

But while the room closed in, Stephen looked up (verse 55). And what he saw changed everything. Jesus was not seated, calmly watching from a distance. He was standing, the way an advocate rises in court to defend the one on trial.

That vision may not have stopped the stones, but it changed the man beneath them. Stephen knelt and prayed for the very people who were killing him (verse 60). After that, Stephen breathes his last.

But Saul wasn’t finished. The church would be persecuted, but scattered seed is how God plants a harvest. Even Saul, the young man who instigated the hostility, would one day meet the same Jesus whom Stephen saw.

Whatever room you walk into today, the verdict of that room is not the final one. Jesus reigns and has the last word. So today, before the hard conversation, before the crowd, do what Stephen did. Lift your eyes. Look for the One who is standing for you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you that you stand for your people when the whole world seems against them. Lift my eyes above the faces and voices around me today, so that I can see you. Fill me with your Spirit as you filled Stephen, so that pressure only reveals your grace in me. Amen.

Thank you for reading today.
