STEADY IN THE STORM

Psalms 112:1-10
1Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commandments!2His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.3Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.4Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.5It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice.6For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever.7He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.8His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.9He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor.10The wicked man sees it and is angry; he gnashes his teeth and melts away; the desire of the wicked will perish!

- 1.The blessed person fears the Lord and delights in his commandments. Are you reluctantly obeying God to joyful delighting in God’s ways?
- 2.In verses 4-5, the righteous person is gracious, merciful, generous, and just. How can your treatment of others reflect the character of God more clearly this week?
- 3.In verses 6-8, the righteous person is not afraid of bad news because his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. What fear or uncertainty do you need to bring under God’s steadying care?
- 4.In verse 9, the upright distributes freely and gives to the poor; what resource, time, or possession are you clinging to out of anxiety, and how might opening your hand become an act of trust this week?
Exposition
Bad news can shake us quickly. An angry message, a diagnosis, a financial concern, a family problem, or an uncertain future can make our hearts restless. We may try to steady ourselves through control, planning, or worry, but fear often finds its way back in.
But paints a picture of a life anchored in something much stronger than shifting circumstances. The writer describes a person who delights in the Lord and freely gives to those in need. When you know the creator of the universe is holding your future, the loud threats of this world suddenly lose their power. God's grace makes us incredibly generous and deeply unshakeable.
This reality means you do not have to live at the mercy of the uncertainties of life. The righteous person is not afraid of bad news, not because bad news never comes, but because the Lord remains faithful when it does. The future may be unknown to us, but it is not unknown to him.
And this trust changes how we treat others. Instead of becoming self-protective, the righteous person becomes generous and gracious. When our security is in God, we do not have to live with closed hands. God’s faithfulness frees us to bless others.
So bring your fears to the Lord today. Let him steady your heart. Walk in his ways with joy, and look for someone to bless. In an unsteady world, a heart anchored in God can still shine with grace.

“Heavenly Father, thank you for being our unshakeable rock when the world around us feels incredibly chaotic and frightening. Please give us the courage to loosen our tight grip on our resources and trust you as our ultimate, generous provider. Guard our hearts from the paralyzing fear of bad news, and fill us with your deep, abiding peace today. We love you and rest securely in your steady hands.”
