“BUT IF NOT”

We face all sort of pressures to simply conform to the world around us. We desperately want to fit in at work, avoid awkward family dynamics, and keep our lives comfortable and predictable. When standing up for our convictions threatens our reputation or our financial security, the intense fear of the metaphorical fiery furnace makes us want to quietly bow to the culture. The heavy expectation to compromise can easily paralyze our faith and silence our witness. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced a literal furnace from a demanding king. They boldly declared that God is entirely able to rescue them from the flames. Yet, the most breathtaking part of their faith is their brave resolve: but if not. They did not need to see the rescue before they would obey. Faith is not a guarantee of escape; it is a commitment to worship regardless of the heat. This gives us hope when we face our own furnaces. We may not know how God will answer. He may deliver us from the trial, or he may sustain us through it. But obedience is never wasted when it is offered to him. The God who is powerful enough to rescue is also faithful enough to hold us. So stand firm today. Do not bow to fear, approval, pressure, or convenience. The world will always build idols and demand your bow, but you were made to worship one Lord, and his throne outlasts every earthly threat. Trust God with the outcome, and give him your obedience. The fire may be there, but it is not greater than the Lord.
