Reflections of Grace

ANTIDOTE TO ANXIETY

Scripture

John 14:1-6

1“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.2In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.4And you know the way to where I am going.”5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Reflect
  1. 1.Is there any fear or anxiety wearing you down? How does Jesus’ words encourage you today?
  2. 2.How does the future hope that Jesus’ pictures in this passage change the way you face present trouble?
  3. 3.Thomas admits that he does not know the way. Where do you need to be honest with Jesus about your confusion instead of pretending you understand?
  4. 4.Jesus he is the way, the truth, and the life. What part of your life needs to be brought back under trust in him rather than your own direction?
Exposition
It is hard to keep your heart from trembling when everything familiar starts to shift. The disciples had walked with Jesus for three years, and now he was telling them he was leaving. Their world was tilting, and the future looked like a dark room with no door. We know the feeling. The diagnosis comes, the job ends, the relationship fractures, and suddenly the ground that felt solid yesterday is crumbling beneath our feet. We want to believe, but our hearts are troubled, and trouble does not disappear just because someone tells us to stop worrying. But Jesus does not offer empty reassurance. He tells them to believe in God and to believe also in him. Then he gives them hope to hold: he is going to prepare a place, and he will come back to take them there. Thomas admits what the rest are thinking; they are lost, confused, and directionless. Jesus meets that honesty with one of the most beautiful claims in Scripture: he is the way, the truth, and the life. He is not handing them a map; he is offering himself. No one comes to the Father except through him, which means the door is not locked and the path is not hidden. It is a person, and his name is Jesus. Belief is not the absence of fear; it is the choice to trust in the midst of it. You do not have to know the way if you know the One who is the way. Your heart may be troubled, but it does not have to stay there. So stop trying to navigate through the darkness alone. Bring your heavy heart to him today. Trust the one who is the truth when everything else feels like a lie, and let Jesus breathe peace into your troubled heart.
Prayer
“Father, when our hearts are troubled and the future feels uncertain, remind us that you have not left us to find our own path. Thank you for preparing a home for us and for being the one who leads us to yourself. Help us to bring our fear and confusion to you honestly, choosing to believe and trust you even when we cannot see what is ahead. May we rest in the promise that you are coming back for us and that we will be with you forever. In Jesus' name, amen.”
