WE CANNOT HELP BUT SPEAK

Acts 4:15-22
15But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another,16saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.17But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.”18So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.19But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge,20for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”21And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened.22For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

- 1.The religious leaders try to silence the apostles; what specific fear of man is currently tempting you to keep your faith quiet in your workplace or circle of influence?
- 2.The apostles declare they cannot stop speaking about what they have seen and heard; what has Jesus done in your life that you should be more willing to talk about?
- 3.The leaders release them because the people are glorifying God; how does this remind you that God can still be honored even when opposition is strong?
Exposition
It's hard to speak up when you know it will cost you. We live in a world that tolerates private belief but bristles at public conviction. The pressure to keep Jesus in a corner is real. Sometimes the warnings even come subtly — raised eyebrows, social exclusion, the unspoken message that your faith is fine as long as it stays invisible. Fear whispers that obedience to God is costly, and slowly we learn to edit ourselves until our silence becomes a habit.
But Peter and John stood before the very authorities who could crush them and said something remarkable: we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard. They had not attended a seminar on evangelism; they had simply been with Jesus. An encounter with the living God makes silence impossible. The council could threaten, but they could not unsee the miracle standing right in front of them.
You do not need to be fearless to be faithful. Peter and John were ordinary men who chose obedience over comfort because they had met the living God. When you've seen the real thing, you cannot fake indifference. We were not saved to be silent. The same Spirit who filled them is the one who whispers courage into your trembling heart today.
So stop waiting until you feel perfectly eloquent or completely fearless to share your faith. Think about the specific ways he has rescued, comforted, or guided you recently, and just tell someone about it. Let your simple, honest words point others to his amazing love and watch him do the rest.
Prayer
“Father, we confess that fear often keeps us quiet when we should speak about your Son. Thank you for giving us courage through your Spirit to share the difference you have made in our lives. Help us to obey you rather than the pressure to stay silent, and give us grace to speak with both boldness and love. May our lives and words point others to the healing and hope we have found in you. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
